Hot Careers – Network Technician

Do you like solving problems?  If a system malfunctions, do you relish in the challenge of fixing it?  Do you enjoy helping others?

If this sounds like you, a career as a Network Technician may be a path you should look into.

As companies rely more and more on computer servers that store sensitive data, network technicians are in demand for ensuring that company networks are functioning properly and can be on the forefront of addressing potential issues before the other computers and equipment in the network are affected.

A Network Technician requires an understanding of network standards, such as an TCP/IP network. He may be expected to maintain, troubleshoot, and administer the use of local area networks (LANs), wide area networks (WANs), mainframe networks, computer workstations, connections to the internet, and peripheral equipment.

As a Network Technician, you may find yourself setting up installing equipment.  Perhaps you’ll rack a server or run copper or fiber cables.  You could be supporting field technicians for a communications company or implementing and supporting disaster recovery solutions.

One of the most appealing things about a career as a network technician is that a college degree is not necessarily required.  Many companies value networking certifications such as the CompTIA Network+.  According to CompTIA, the Network+ certification “validates the essential knowledge and skills needed to confidently design, configure, manage, and troubleshoot any wired and wireless networks.”

CompTIA deployed a survey to HR managers in 2015 regarding their perception of Information Technology training and certification and found 91% believe IT certifications play a key role in the hiring process.  Furthermore, 90% agree that IT-certified employees are more likely to be promoted than those without IT certifications.
