At the start of 2020, did you sit down to think about what you want to accomplish, not only in the new year but in this new decade?

While we can’t help you meet all of your goals for 2020 and beyond, we can help you start pursuing a new career in the IT industry. Read on to learn more about the outlook for IT jobs this year and how we can help you take the first step toward your new career.

Outlook for IT Jobs Nationally

First, let’s take a look at how the need for IT jobs is expected to grow across the country, then we’ll narrow down our focus to here in North Carolina.

According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the need for computer and information technology jobs is projected to grow 12 percent from 2018 to 2028, which is at a much faster rate than the average for all occupations.

Over that 10 year period, it’s estimated that over 546,000 new jobs will be added and the demand for IT professionals will be higher than ever.

This sounds great, but if there aren’t IT jobs available locally, it doesn’t make much sense to pursue this new career path unless you’re planning to relocate. Let’s take a closer look at the opportunity for IT jobs here in our home state.

Outlook for IT Jobs in North Carolina

One of the best ways to predict the future outlook of IT jobs is to look to the past. NC Tech Association publishes a monthly report of the IT job postings in our state so you can see exactly how the IT job market is changing locally.

Looking back over the past thirteen months (since December 2018), the average number of open IT positions in North Carolina each month was over 29,000!

And that number showed a significant increase from 2018. Nationally, there was a 12.7% increase in IT job postings from 2018 to 2019, while there was a 27.2% increase in North Carolina over the same time period.

All indications show that the need for IT jobs will continue to rise, and as new technology is developed, new positions will continue to be created. There’s truly never been a better time to pursue a career in IT!
