The Value of an A+ Certification

CompTIA A+

CompTIA’s A+ certification is widely considered the entry level standard for networking.  As the IT industry continues to change and adapt, how valuable is a basic networking certification?  The answer is, likely more valuable than you think.

For starters, it is arguably the best way for potential IT professionals to determine if they have a fundamental understanding of computers.  The exam,  which is broken up into two parts, 220-801 and 220-802, covers maintenance of desktops, laptops, mobile devices, operating systems, and printers. The new exams just introduced by CompTIA, 220-901 and 220-902, cover roughly 75% of the objectives of the previous version.  The new version will introduce newer technologies, and the overall structure has been revised to make each exam more self-contained.  This will allow test takers to focus efforts on passing a single exam before clearing the slate and starting the next exam.

IT technical instructor Eric Logan says, “I have taught a few advanced level courses where students are missing basic knowledge that they would have gained while pursuing an A+ certification.”  A+ certification holders have gone on to positions far more advanced than help desk, including System and Network Administrators, Web Developers, Project Managers, and Security specialists.  Starting with the fundamentals can provide the backbone for a successful IT career.  That’s why it’s the first one we teach at Carolina Career College in our Career Development Program.
The other reason an A+ certification remains valuable and is arguably increasing in value is the seismic change taking place in position requirements. According to CompTIA, 91 percent of employers believe IT certifications play a key role in the hiring process and that IT certifications are a reliable predictor of a successful employee.  The importance of certifications over a degree has increased exponentially over the past few years.

Trying to break into the IT industry without any experience can be challenging.  Internships and volunteer work goes a long way towards pairing with your certification.  It’s why our Career Services department encourages both paths.

The A+ certification continues to be a valuable certification for the Information Technology industry to validate your skill knowledge and increase marketability.
