As a professional career coach I am often asked, “What is the best advice you can give someone regarding a job search,” and I answer it with simply one word: Prepare. Without this one word all job seekers are doomed. They will have an unproductive job search, and if they are lucky enough to get an interview, without preparation, that will be unproductive as well.

When searching for employment the first thing to do is perform a targeted job search. Without preparation you will be unable to do so. Before you even start searching you need to prepare by asking a multitude of questions, which include but are not limited to the following:

  • What industry do I want to work in?
  • What field do I want to work in?
  • What company do I want to work for?
  • How far do I want to commute?

Without answers to such questions you will be doing a random and haphazard search and will continue to spin your wheels. With a prepared and targeted job search you will be focused on finding the right positions, with the right companies that are in line with your career path.
Preparation will also play a key role in the most important aspect to securing a new position, and that is the interview.

Your odds of winning over an interviewer with no preparation are miniscule. Interviewers can tell when someone has prepared for an interview. By doing so you are showing that hiring manager that you are 100% committed to securing that opportunity. To wow that prospective employer you will need to have done quality research on the company you’re interviewing for. You will need to be prepared to sell yourself with stories from your professional career that show what value you can bring to the organization. You will need to have prepared questions to ask of the interviewer which will show your interest in not just the position, but the organization as a whole. These are things that will make you attractive in the eyes of the employer.

To be successful in finding the right opportunities to apply for, and to be ready for the interview, you need only remember one word: Prepare. Execute this word effectively and you immediately increase your chances of securing the position you want.
