Self-improvement is an innately human trait. We want to get better and succeed, and every year around the same time we come up with a goal for ourselves and call it a New Year’s Resolution.  Do you know how many people achieve their New Year’s Resolutions?

That kind of failure rate begs the question – What is the difference between people who achieve their goals and those that don’t? There are a few commonalities.

One of the most important factors, according to motivational speaker Anthony Robbins, is writing your goals down. Robbins claims people are 73 percent more likely to achieve their goals when they’ve written them down. Simple, right?

Secondly, it is imperative that your goals be SMART – which stands for Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Time-bound. Goal setting is a process that helps you visualize your desired achievements and creates a specific action plan (what we refer to as a CAP – Career Action Plan) that you follow.

Note that career planning is very different from job searching. You may find yourself searching for a job based on what you think you can achieve. Career planning is a process that helps match you with a long-term career based on goals you want to achieve.
