Honor a Veteran this Holiday Season

Carmine Napolitano, like many New Yorkers, moved to the Raleigh-Durham area last year.  He owned a successful landscaping company in New York, but when he visited towns like Raleigh, Durham, Cary, Apex, and Holly Springs, he knew he wanted to move.  The cost of living was lower.  The traffic was less congested.  The area was beautiful.  The people were friendly.  Carmine decided on Fuquay-Varina, NC and started his business, Dix Hills Landscaping & Masonry, to serve the Central North Carolina region.

In the summer of 2016, Carmine watched an interview with a Gold Star family.  Gold Star families are those family members who lost a loved one in military service.  This interview inspired Carmine to want to do something for veterans and those who have sacrificed for our country.

At Carolina Career College, we are fortunate to see heroes every day.  Veterans can use their earned Post 9/11 GI Bill for IT career training and career placement assistance and the school assists them with their military to civilian career transitions.  Militaryfriendly.com named Carolina Career College a 2017 Military Friendly School.  Right away, we wanted to be part of this initiative.

Military Friendly School

Carmine offered to build a fire pit and patio for a veteran or someone who has sacrificed for their country, and “Backyard for the Brave” was born.  After Dix Hills Landscaping and Masonry donated the labor, Triangle Brick in Durham, NC offered to donate the materials.  Finally, Veterans Entering Transition, a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering veterans in their career transitions, came aboard to join the project.  Capitol Broadcasting Company, including 99.9 The Fan in Raleigh, NC, donated airtime to help promote “Backyard for the Brave”.

As Anne Showalter from Veterans Entering Transition put it, the patio and fire pit is for someone very deserving to “relax and escape the stresses of daily life”.  In recognizing acts of bravery, eligible nominees include:

Active service members and veterans of the United States military

First Responders (including police, firefighters, paramedics, and lifeguards)

Gold Star immediate family members

We’re proud to be a part of the “Backyard for the Brave” project and thank our generous partners.  Please take a moment to honor a veteran or nominate a deserving hero and help make this holiday season extra special for one of our country’s bravest.
